Unarguably one of the greatest children's authors of all time, and through time. One of my favorite things about L'Engle's work is that she clearly respects children as humans with agency capable of learning and thinking about difficult things. You would think this would be true of all children's authors, but we can certainly agree that it is not. 

I recognize the irony of including L'Engle (who uses fantasy / sci-fi to express her Christian faith) and Pullman (who uses fantasy to critique the hegemony of Christian thought), but we contain multitudes over here at Bread & Water.
