Mic City Sons gets all the attention but I prefer Cop and Speeder; it was one of the first vinyl records I bought myself when I convinced my parents that yes, I really actually wanted a record player even though we had a CD player. I love to think about the way I discovered music before the internet (or, at least, the internet as it is now)— I rented 'Royal Tenenbaums' because it was in the "recommended" section of my local video store, and heard Elliott Smith for the first time. Then I borrowed an Elliott Smith CD from the library (and, naturally, burned it to my family's computer) and discovered Heatmiser by looking at everything in the library catalog that he was credited on.
Is that cringe nostalgia that makes me no better than a boomer wistfully remembering the 60s? Probably. But whatever.
